Rebel forces in South Sudan
Hope in South Sudan, so abundant on independence, is fading fast
VIEWS OF DARFUR, NEW AND OLD
In Darfur, sometimes very little is left of bombing victims
Shelter for those displaced is often pitifully inadequate; since the UN/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) first deployed in January 2008, well over 2 million people have been newly displaced
Camps for the displaced are populated largely by women and children
Aerial bombardment of civilians is constant in Darfur–especially in Jebel Marra; when carried out by Antonov “bombers” (retrofitted cargo planes), they are utterly indiscriminate
The infamous Janjaweed militia, now recycled into the “Rapid Response Forces,” sill murdering, raping, destroying villages…doing Khartoum’s bidding
Tens of thousands of these girls and women have been raped in Darfur, often gang-raped in front of their families (photograph by Mia Farrow, 2007)
Arms and armaments are everywhere in Darfur, despite the UN arms embargo
