UN Complicity in the Darfur Genocide Takes Many Forms

Eric Reeves | April 28, 2018

UN complicity in the Darfur genocide has taken many forms over many years. Here we see the extent of this depravity and an incomprehensible indifference to the implications of meeting with Omar al-Bashir. A senior UN official declares herself greatly “honored” on receiving an award directly from Omar al-Bashir, for whom the ICC has issued arrest warrants, charging him with genocide and crimes against humanity. This is simply despicable and tells us much about why the Darfur genocide continues:

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan honoured by Al Bashir | Radio Dabanga, April 27, 2018 | KHARTOUM

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan (UNRC/HC), Marta Ruedas, has been awarded the First-Class Order of the Two Niles by Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir. The Order was personally bestowed on Ruedas by Al Bashir at a ceremony in Khartoum on Thursday “in appreciation for her service to Sudan during the period between August 2015 to April 2018.” “It is a great honour to be granted this award from the President of Sudan and it has been an equal honour to working in and for Sudan over the past almost three years” said Ruedas after receiving the award.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan Marta Ruedas is here awarded the First-Class Order of the Two Niles by ICC-indicted génocidaire Omar Al Bashir. There could hardly be a more despicable action by a senior UN official.

Ruedas was granted the First Class Order of the Two Niles during a farewell audience with the President of the Republic, Omar Al Bashir, who received the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator at his office at the Presidential Palace. Ruedas was recently appointed as the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to Iraq.

[UN guidelines prohibit all but absolutely necessary contact with al-Bashir following his indictment by the ICC for genocide and massive crimes against humanity. Ruecdas’ flouting of this guideline to receive a personal honor is despicable but all too revealing of the cozy relation UN officials—even humanitarian officials—have with this regime of génocidaires—ER]
