South Kordofan/Blue Nile Coordination Unit: Humanitarian Update (August 2019)

Terribly grim conditions continue to prevail in much of South Kordofan and Blue Nile, in and near rebel-controlled areas in particular. It is the rainy season, and thus the very height of the “lean season” or “hunger gap.” Many of the shortages are a direct result of the continuing humanitarian embargo imposed by the al-Bashir regime. It is telling that the Transitional Military Council has chosen to continue this barbaric assault on civilian life in the Two Areas.

The popular uprising in Sudan has not made lifting the embargo a priority. I find this incomprehensible, particularly give the worry by many Sudanese that the uprising is “Khartoum-centric,” and does not give adequate attention to the suffering in the peripheral areas of this vast country.
