Public and News Scrutiny of Talisman Energy Builds, March 24, 2000

Is the “Sudan factor” out of Talisman share price?

Is Talisman Energy’s presence in Sudan still “newsworthy?”

Some oil analysts have argued that the “Sudan factor” is out of TLM share price (unfortunately one such analysis was made when that share price was at $43.50: TLM closed yesterday at $35.80—oops!). It has also recently been suggested to me by a Canadian reporter that perhaps the Talisman story is getting old—is losing its “legs.” I find this latter a most peculiar analysis. Indeed, if anything the story has moved from having the “legs” of a high school junior varsity runner to those of Carl Lewis! But don’t take my word for it: just check out the census of news coverage of “Talisman in the limelight”! And as to the “Sudan factor” being out of TLM share price?! Dream on, you Calgary boys! With news coverage of divestment like this, how can anyone even imagine that the bottom has been reached? Indeed, this “analyst” has just lowered his target figure: if Talisman remains in Sudan, it will sink below $20. by June 15th.
